Civic honour conferred on Tullamore nun for her work with young people

Offaly County Council has conferred a Civic Honour on Tullamore's Sr Genevieve Hassey in recognition of her work with young people.

The honour for Sr Jenny, as she is commonly known, was conferred at a small ceremony which she attended along with a number of her close friends, council Cathaoirleach Cllr Declan Harvey, council CEO Anna Marie Delaney, and Denis Magner, chairperson of the St Mary's Youth Club Board.

At the ceremony Cllr Harvey presented an engraved silver plaque to Sr Jenny to acknowledge her long-standing commitment and dedication to St Mary's Youth Club and her work with the youth of Tullamore.

He said it gave him great pleasure to make this presentation as Cathaoirleach of Offaly County Council.

Cllr Harvey had himself joined the youth club when he was a pupil in Scoil Mhuire in the 1970s, and he said Sr Jenny was a driving force of the Youth Club who had given long years of service to the local community.

Chief Executive Anna Marie Delaney presented the Certificate of Recognition to Sr Jenny, while a bouquet of flowers was presented by Denis Magner on behalf of the Board of St. Mary’s Youth Club.

The ceremony was held in an outdoor setting, and was fully compliant with the current public health guidelines.
