Team905 to mark Women in Sport Week

Women in Sport Week runs until March 13 and to mark the event, Team905 Cycling Club will host a 40-kilometre spin tomorrow morning (Saturday), March 12, beginning at 10am from the Canal Harbour in Edenderry.

The club is delighted to host this initiative in association with Offaly Sports Partnership and Cycling Ireland. The route will run through Rhode and Daingean, where there will be a coffee stop, and back to Edenderry through Ballyfore.

It will be covered at an easy pace and is open to beginners as well as regular cyclists. This is a great opportunity to become involved in a very healthy sport. Why not come along and enjoy the spin?

Entry is free and the event is for over-18s only. Further details are available from the club’s Development Officer Joan Bourke at joan@mylerstown.com or by text message to 086-2233493.

Pat Jones Memorial Cycle

Meanwhile, preparations continue for the seventh running of the Pat Jones Memorial Cycle which will take place on Saturday, April 16 and the club sub-committee are busy making the logistical arrangements for the day.

Unfortunately missing from the calendar for the last two years because of the Covid pandemic, the PJMC will hopefully be at least as successful as in its six previous editions which have generated over €30,000 for local charities.

A founder member of Team905, Pat was always a committed community development advocate.

Apart from his work in the establishment of a cycling club in north Offaly, Pat was for many years a tireless volunteer in the then Edenderry Credit Union (now Croi Laighean) and with the local branch of Comhaltas Ceolteoiri Eireann.

“In Team905 we are always proud to honour the memory of one of our most popular members and we are all looking forward to getting the PJMC back on the road after the two-year lockdown,” said Hugh O'Donoghue on behalf of Team905 CC.

Starting times are 10am for the 90km event and 10.30am for the shorter 40km. Both events will start from St Mary’s Secondary School. Registration will be available online at https://eventmaster.ie/events/Sport or on the day at St Mary’s.

Registration fees are €10 for the 40km (€20 for non-Cycling Ireland members) and €20 for the 90km (€30 for non-Cycling Ireland members). The club is delighted to include North Offaly Meals on Wheels and Helping Holles Street (National Maternity Foundation) as the two beneficiaries of this year’s event.

As in previous years the main sponsor for the event will be Croi Laighean Credit Union.

Updates on arrangements will appear over the next few weeks in local media and on the Team905 Facebook page.
