Gardai continuing to investigate early morning assault in Tullamore

Gardai are continuing to investigate an incident in which a man in his 50s was assaulted with a golf club in Tullamore early on Sunday morning last.

The victim was reportedly walking to walk when he was assaulted on the Clonminch Road at approximately 6.30am.

The man is understood to have been approached by a car, containing four men, which pulled over and asked him for directions.

He was subsequently attacked and struck with the golf club, though he was not seriously injured in the incident.

On Sunday evening, Offaly Gardai put out an online appeal connected to the incident, asking the public for assistance in relation to a silver Nissan Qashqai.

"Tullamore Garda are seeking any witnesses that may have seen the occupants of a silver Nissan Qashqai acting suspiciously around the Clonminch area and Tullamore town area between 6am and 7am Sunday (November 6)," said the Gardai in a social media post. Witnesses were asked to contact Tullamore Garda Station on 0579327052.

When contacted by the Offaly Independent on Wednesday afternoon, a spokesperson for the Garda press office said investigations into the assault were "ongoing" and that no arrests had been made at that stage.
