Defence Forces Recruitment

The Defence Forces are currently recruiting for Army General Service Enlistment.

This recruit platoon will be trained in the Defence Forces Training Centre (DFTC) in the Curragh Camp, Co. Kildare commencing in April 2023. The application process includes an online psychometric test, fitness test, interview and security vetting. No formal education is required to join the Defence Forces as a recruit.

The Defence Forces is looking for people who seek a challenging and physically demanding career. Applicants should work well in a high pressure environment, be willing to serve abroad for extended periods of time and have the ability to work in disciplined military environment and to work with others in a team.

Defence Forces recruit training is 12 weeks in duration, during which recruits are gradually introduced to Defence Forces training skills, fitness and values. On completion successful of basic training, Two Star Privates will be posted to a unit in DFTC and will undergo a further 12 weeks training to progress to the rank of 3 Star Private.

Private soldiers are encouraged to complete further courses in the Army, which may enable the soldier to specialise or qualify the soldier for promotion and overseas service. The Professional Military Education scheme offers pathways into third level education at all ranks. Opportunities to serve overseas are available to soldiers once they complete the required courses of training and meet the qualifying criteria for the role in which they deploy.
