Teehan seeks to become GAA President

Coolderry's Pat Teehan is today seeking to become the second Offaly man to be elected GAA President.

Teehan is among three candidates contesting the election tonight (Friday) at the GAA Congress in Croke Park.

Teehan is current Leinster GAA chair and will take on Armagh's Jarlath Burns and Donegal's Niall Erskine in his bid to follow in the footsteps of Tullamore’s John Dowling, who was President from 1988-1990.

Offaly GAA has thrown its support behind Teehan's bid.

In a statement, it said: “Pat is, undoubtedly, equipped to deal with the challenges and opportunities faced by the GAA in the coming years and that is why Offaly GAA is confident he will be successful in the vote on Friday evening.”

It said Pat has served the association at all levels for over 30 years and is most deserving of election as President elect.

Should he be successful, he would take over as President from Larry McCarthy in 2024.

Offaly GAA said his track record as a volunteer administrator spoke for itself.

He was Secretary of his home club, before joining the County Board executive as Public Relations Officer, a role he fulfilled for 13 years.

He was also Secretary and Chairperson of Offaly Coiste na nÓg, Vice-Chairperson of the County Board and then Chairperson between 2007 and 2012.

He gained further experience as Offaly GAA’s Central Council delegate, was PRO of Leinster Council, then Vice-Chairperson of the provincial body, before serving as Chairperson of Leinster Council for the past three years.

He has always remained a committed follower of Offaly GAA and regularly assists on match-days in O’Connor Park and the Faithful Fields.

The winner on Friday will be determined by the PR single transferable vote system.
