Seir Kieran poised to bounce back in battle with Clodiagh Gaels
By Kevin Egan
Two minutes into the second half of last Saturday’s refixed Senior B semi-final, Seir Kieran were in real trouble against Kilcormac-Killoughey. They led by 1-6 to 0-7 but a strong breeze was blowing towards the town end of St Brendan’s Park, and it was K-K who had the wind at their backs for the remainder of that half.
The Clareen side had posted 15 wides up to that point and were in real danger of leaving a winnable game, and with it the Senior B championship, behind them.
Led by a superb display from teenage attacker Seán Carey at one end of the field and by totemic centre-back Barry Kealey at the other, they just about found their way through despite conceding a late goal, and so a remarkable club that draws from around 600 people in total still has three adult teams pursuing championships.
The intermediates are up against it, taking on Shamrocks on Sunday, though their win over Shinrone last time out was a tremendous result and undoubtedly their best showing of the year so far. It’s harder to see a happy ending for them on this occasion.
In the Senior B decider (Saturday, Glenisk O'Connor Park, 2.30), however, they look that little bit too balanced and strong overall for a Clodiagh Gaels team that showed fantastic spirit to salvage a win from four points down going into the later stages of their semi-final against Clara.
Spirits will be high around Killeigh and Killurin after their junior football final success against Doon last weekend, but this one might be a bridge too far.
