Fines issued to motorists after speeding clampdown near Shannonbridge

Gardai in Offaly said several fines were issued to motorists near Shannonbridge yesterday (Wednesday) evening following speed checks in the area.

The speed enforcement was carried out by the Offaly Roads Policing unit, and resulted in "a number" of fixed charge notices being issued to motorists who were driving in excess of the speed limit.

The clampdown is the latest in a series of efforts to improve road safety following horrific accidents which resulted in multiple fatalities on Irish roads during recent weeks.

On Monday, Gardai in Offaly detected a vehicle travelling at 96km per hour in a 50km zone.

A car belonging to an unaccompanied driver on a provisional licence in the county was also seized on Monday after it was detected travelling at 81km per hour in a 50km zone.
