Seven Garda stations in Offaly and Laois 'undergoing upgrades and renovation works'

Seven Garda stations across the counties of Offaly and Laois are undergoing upgrades and renovation works costing over €200,000 each.

That's according to details provided to Offaly TD Carol Nolan by the Minister for Public Expenditure, Paschal Donohoe.

Deputy Nolan said she had requested specific information on the number of Garda stations in Offaly and Laois that are the subject of capital works, and that her engagement with the Minister was part of her efforts to ensure the provision of greater operational hours in existing Garda stations in the constituency.

“While I welcome the response from the Minister and indeed The Office of Public Works (OPW), I do note with some concern that the ground floor refurbishment works for Kilcormac Garda Station are only at the tender preparation stage while the cell upgrade for Birr Garda Station is merely at the preliminary stage,” said Deputy Nolan.

“I would also highlight that the refurbishment, renovation and expansion of current Garda Station and associated projects in Portlaoise is still not due for completion before 2027.

“I continue to engage with the Minister, the OPW and indeed the Minister for Justice because it is my clear view that we need a much stronger Garda presence and an increase in the operational hours of our Garda stations especially around Kilcormac, Banagher and Kinnitty where there are growing populations,” the Independent TD concluded.
