The Great Telescope at Birr Castle

Free space-themed creative workshop at Birr Castle

Imagine being able to dive into space-themed arts activities and take your artistic creations home at the end of the day.

That's exactly what's on offer at Birr Castle Demense on Tuesday, August 19 next, when Astronomical Observatories of Ireland (AOI) will host a free, fun, hands-on creative workshop exploring Ireland’s incredible astronomical heritage!

Astronomical Observatories of Ireland (AOI) is a group of historic observatory sites currently seeking UNESCO World Heritage status and, as such, they are delighted to impart their knowledge of astronomy to the next generation.

Each session in Birr Castle will blend fascinating stories from the past with exciting modern space science, all inspired by the famous Great Telescope still standing on site.

Children aged between eight years and 13 are welcome to join in the fun, but each child must be accompanied by an adult.

The free creative workshop, which is supported by Offaly County Council’s Creative Ireland Programme — must be booked in advance as tickets are required for each child attending and their accompanying adults.

Workshops are timed to take place at 10am and 11.30am, with a maximum of 30 people per session (this includes adults and children).

Times: Two workshops — 10:00 AM & 11:30
