Tullamore author and illustrator helps to bring special story to life

A Tullamore-based children’s author and illustrator has once again brought her creative talents to life by illustrating, editing and production designing a very special book in memory of a much-loved little girl.

Julie-Ann Carroll from Blueball, who previously self-published her own children’s well-being picture book Our Super Teacher, has spent the past year working alongside author and Westmeath teacher, Eileen Loughlin to create Annabel’s Adventures at the Beach, which was launched last week.

The picture book tells the story of a fun-filled family day at the seaside, complete with sandcastles, a mischievous dog, and even blue ice creams to finish off the adventure. It was written by the Delvin teacher in memory of her little daughter, Annabell, who sadly passed away in 2018.

Julie-Ann Carroll, who is herself a mother to three young children, described as "a privilege" the process of bringing Eileen Loughlin's words to life through her colourful illustrations.

“It has been an honour to help create this picture book for Annabel and her family. Every page has been drawn with love, and I’m so glad Eileen trusted me to bring her vision to life” said Julie-Ann, who lives in Clonminch with her husband, Mark, and their young family, and teachers in St. Tola's NS in Delvin.

The daughter of Kate and Paddy McKenna from Blueball, Julie-Ann manages to fit in her creative work during pockets of free time, usually in the evenings when her children are asleep.She says illustrating has always been "a passion" and being able to use her skills for such a meaningful project has made this book especially close to her heart.

Annabel’s Adventures at the Beach is a celebration of family, memory, and the simple joys of a day by the sea. It stands not only as a beautiful children’s story, but also as a touching tribute to Annabel’s life and the love that continues to surround her.
