Offaly climate and biodiversity group to hold its first AGM next week

The Offaly Climate and Biodiversity Action Group will hold its inaugural annual general meeting (AGM) on Tuesday next, October 7, at 7.30pm in St Mary's Youth Centre, Tullamore.

Formed earlier this year, the group has already established a strong presence across the county, with members from Edenderry, Birr, Tullamore, Clara, Banagher and beyond.

The group said its mission is to enhance, protect and promote nature, while providing opportunities for people to learn about and respond to the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss in Offaly.

The aims of Offaly Climate and Biodiversity Action Group include enhancing and protecting nature in Offaly and its surrounding areas, providing education and awareness opportunities on climate and biodiversity, sharing balanced and factual information in the community, and offering a safe and welcoming space for people to connect and exchange ideas.

The group has so far hosted two successful events: A talk at Tullamore library by a Met Éireann meteorologist on how climate change is affecting biodiversity; and Offaly’s first 'climate café' held in St Mary’s Youth Centre, Tullamore, in August.

The group said the AGM next week "will build on this momentum," saying elections for officers would be held and that an open invitation is being extended "for anyone interested in climate action, biodiversity, or simply learning more about these issues" to get involved.

Members of the group attended the National Ploughing Championships and found that climate and biodiversity issues were on people's minds.

A spokesperson for the group said: "Many households and businesses want to be more sustainable but don’t always know where to find accurate information.

"We hope Offaly Climate and Biodiversity Action Group can be a trusted source and a place where people can connect, share knowledge and take action."

All are welcome to attend the AGM. For further information, visit the group's Facebook page or email: offalyclimateandbio@outlook.com
