TG4 to stream national boxing championships featuring Offaly duo

The conclusion of the National Elite Boxing Championships will be streamed live on TG4's YouTube page this Friday and Saturday, with two Offaly boxers in action.

World bronze medallist Gráinne Walsh, from Tullamore, is through to final in the women's 65kg weight category, after defeating European U23 bronze medalist, Ava Henry of Dublin Docklands, via a 4-1 split decision in their semi-final contest on Saturday.

Gráinne will now face Linda Desmond, of Rylane Boxing Club in Cork, in the 65kg final on Saturday. The night of boxing is due to get underway in Dublin's National Stadium from 6pm.

Daingean's Brian Kennedy, meanwhile, who boxes out of the St Brigid's club in Edenderry will be in semi-final action at 85kg on Friday.

Kennedy, who, like Gráinne Walsh is bidding to retain a national title won last year, will face former World Youth medallist Nathan Ojo, of Esker Boxing Club, Dublin, in Friday's semi-final, with the winner going on to a final on Saturday evening.

On Friday last there was disappointment for Kennedy's clubmate in Edenderry, the Portarlington boxer Rachel Lawless, as she was defeated by Shannon Sweeney of St Anne's Boxing Club in Mayo, on a 4-1 split decision in their 51kg quarter final.

TG4 and Nemeton Productions will stream the semi finals this Friday, January 16, and the finals on Saturday, January 17, beginning at 6.30pm and 6pm respectively, on TG4’s YouTube channel.

Double Olympic champion Kellie Harrington, Roscommon's world champion Aoife O'Rourke and world bronze medallist Patsy Joyce from Mullingar will also be among those in action at the nationals this weekend.
