Community garden being developed in Banagher
A new community garden is set to flourish in Banagher thanks to a partnership between the local Tidy Towns group and the Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB).
Work has gotten underway on the project, which is designed to provide "a vibrant community space where people can grow fruit, vegetables and flowers, support biodiversity, and enjoy the many physical and mental wellbeing benefits that gardening offers".
Those behind the initiative say it will be a place for everyone in the community – regardless of age or gardening experience – to come together, learn new skills, meet new people, and help create a lasting resource for the Banagher area.
Work carried out to date has seen volunteers prepare planting beds and begin the transformation of the site.
Organisers say the enthusiasm shown so far has been encouraging, but they are now appealing for more volunteers to help bring the project to life.
"We want this garden to be a place that the entire community can be proud of," said Clare Claffey of Banagher Tidy Towns.
"Whether you have years of gardening experience or have never picked up a spade before, there is a place for you. Every hour volunteered will help create something special for Banagher."
The community garden is a collaboration between Banagher Tidy Towns and the LOETB Banagher.
Anyone interested in getting involved is invited to contact Banagher Tidy Towns through its Facebook page or phone 087 6787403.
Volunteers are welcome to help with gardening, planting, maintenance, DIY projects and many other aspects of developing the garden.
