Pilot shopfront enhancement scheme to begin in Tullamore
A new scheme to encourage and support local business owners in undertaking improvement works to their shopfronts and building facades is to launch in Tullamore this month.
The Pilot Shopfront Enhancement Scheme, an Offaly County Council initiative, aims to enhance the visual appeal and vitality of towns and villages across the county, the council said when announcing that Columcille Street and William Street (both in Tullamore) are the first areas to be identified for the pilot project.
According to the council, a town centre survey undertaken in 2026 identified these streets as 'a priority area' where investment in shopfront improvements could deliver a significant visual impact and enhance the appearance of this town centre location.
In a statement, the council said: 'By promoting high-quality design and investing in vibrant, visually attractive shopfronts, the council seeks to create a more welcoming and appealing town centre for residents, visitors and businesses alike'.
Funding for the new pilot project was identified as part of the council's 2026 budget process, and the council believes that 'investment through the scheme will complement the public realm improvement works already completed on these streets and will further enhance their attractiveness, character and overall appeal'.
The Pilot Shopfront Enhancement Scheme has been developed by Offaly County Council's planning section in conjunction with Team Tullamore. The counil said it is intended that the scheme will inform the development of future shopfront enhancement initiatives across the county, subject to the availability of funding.
Businesses located within the designated area will be contacted directly, the council said. Further information, including application details and application forms, is available at www.offaly.ie/tullamoremdforms/
