Tullamore church set to mark its 40th anniversary

The 40-year anniversary of the opening of the present Church of the Assumption in Tullamore will be celebrated this month.

The new church was built in the mid-80s after the previous, 77-year-old, Church of the Assumption was destroyed by fire on October 31, 1983.

The solemn dedication of the redeveloped church took place on Sunday, August 17, 1986, with a two and a half-hour ceremony that was celebrated by a number of bishops and attended by the Papal Nuncio.

Tullamore parish said that, in the four decades since then, the church has "been at the heart of the parish community, a place where generations have gathered in prayer, celebrated the sacraments, shared in times of joy and sorrow, and found strength and comfort in their faith".

To mark the anniversary, there will be a celebratory Vigil Mass held on Saturday, August 15, celebrated by the Bishop of the Diocese of Meath, Tom Deenihan.

All parishioners, past and present, are invited.
