Legendary folk singer to be celebrated in Tullamore

One of Ireland's most legendary musicians is to be celebrated at an event in Tullamore.

Esker Arts has announced that The Luke Kelly Story - created and performed by Dublin singer and multi-instrumentalist Chris Kavanagh – will come to the county on Friday, April 23 (8pm) with tickets going on sale this Friday, August 28 from 10am.

Kelly was a most renowned singer, folk musician and actor and co-founded The Dubliners in 1962, becoming admired for songs such 'The Auld Triangle', 'The Town I Loved So Well', and 'Hand Me Down My Bible'.

He passed away, aged 43, on January 30, 1984, but left an indelible mark as one of the greatest folk artists of the 20th century.

Kavanagh's two-hour show, said a press release from Esker Arts, sees his 'multi-vision background bringing the audience on a journey through Luke’s music'.

Kavanagh regularly sells-out performances in Ireland’s most prestigious venues such as Cork Opera House, the Grand Opera House and Dublin’s Vicar Street, where his show was even attended by former President Michael D Higgins and his wife, Sabina.

In 2011, Kavanagh was asked by John Sheahan to perform with The Dubliners on the German tour has also made a guest appearance on their 50th anniversary DVD. Luke Kelly's family are still in regular attendance at Kavanagh's Dublin concerts.
