'Successful' New York event will donate funds to Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund

The Offaly Society New York has described its annual fundraising golf outing as 'a major success' – with the majority of the funds going towards the Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund.

The event recently took place at Sprain Lake Golf Course, Yonkers, New York, with the society this week publicly thanking businesses and organisations who assisted through financial contributions, donating prizes, and by sponsoring the tournament.

'It was a fantastic day and major success, and we extend heartfelt thanks to all generous sponsors, golfers, volunteers, and everyone who supported the event', the society said on social media.

'The generosity and support is what makes the day possible each year, and we truly appreciate everyone who contributed, sponsored, played, helped out, or simply came along to support.

We are especially proud that the majority of the proceeds will be donated to the Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund, a cause that means so much to so many. We hope all participants enjoyed the day as much as we did, and we look forward to seeing them again next year', the society added.

The Ashling Murphy Memorial fund was set up by the Murphy family (from Blue Ball) in November 2022, stating its main objective as “the further enhancement, development and the advancements of the traditional Irish arts, culture and heritage for young people”, and that all donations and proceeds from fundraisers will be utilised to achieve objectives which are “deemed close to Ashling’s heart and represent the many interests she had in her 23 years”.

Ashling, a primary schoolteacher and gifted musician, was just 23-years-old when she was killed on the afternoon of January 12, 2022, while out jogging along the banks of the Grand Canal at Cappincur, Tullamore after finishing work at nearby Durrow National School.

Late last week, applications reopened for community groups to make submissions for funding from the Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund.

The committee announced that all applications for Q3 2026 will close in mid-November 2026 with decisions expected to be issued in December 2026.

The committee also advised that all applicants to the Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund, must ensure that their proposed project or initiative aligns with one or more of the Fund’s objectives.
