Sensational Shane storms to Irish Open success
Sensational Shane Lowry stormed to a record-breaking Irish Open win today, with a remarkable eleven-shot margin of victory.
It was a show-stopping display by the Offaly, man who followed up his course-record 62 from Friday, with a seven-under final round of 63 in the white-heat of a final Sunday round at Doonbeg.
His rounds of 67, 62, 65 and 63 left him on 23 under, eleven clear of the joint second-placed Patrick Reed from USA and Chilean Joaquin Niemann.
The win also ended a four-year wait for an individual tour victory, since his 2023 BMW PGA Championship success and banished lingering demons from earlier in the year when he surrendered leads.
It was also Lowry's second Irish Open success, following up on his famous 2009 victory as an amateur 17 years later.
Speaking afterwards, he said: "I mean this year has been quite difficult on the course for me. I've had a few chances to win and I took some really tough times.
"To come here this week and do this, I just don't do things by half measures, I can't believe I'm standing here with that leaderboard."
Lowry was relentless, settling any early nerves with a birdie on the 1st, before adding further birdies on 5, 7 and 8.
A dropped shot on 9 saw him three under for his front nine, though that was quickly wiped out with a birdie on 10.
Leading by a wide margin, the win was all but sealed, but back to back birdies on 14 and 15 ensured he could see out the remaining holes in comfort,
A long-range putt on the last for a final birdie saw him end on 23 under, with an incredible eleven shot lead over a stellar field.
It was a remarkable display and one that will given the Clara native immeasurable confidence for the rest of the season and into next year.
It’s the second successive year an Irish golfer has won the national open, after Rory McIlroy’s 2025 success.
Lowry was presented with the trophy afterwards by US President Donald Trump.
