Carthage's sports auction raises remarkable sum for charity
Well-known Offaly sports fanatic and former GAA referee, Carthage Buckley, who recently auctioned off a collection of sports memorabilia in aid of Dóchas Offaly Cancer Support Group, managed to raise a total of €16,962 for the group.
The auctioned collection was a remarkable compilation of GAA memorabilia and also included rare gems from the world of soccer and rugby.
The collection, gathered over 60 years, took place at Gallen Community School, Ferbane, and was conducted by former All-Ireland hurling referee, Brian Gavin.
Carthage, who is originally from Ballycumber but a long-time resident in Clara, staged the unique event in memory of his late son John, following his untimely death from cancer in 2019 at the age of 42. John was a prominent member of Clara GAA Club, winning senior and junior football medals with them in the 1990s and 2000s.
Speaking after Carthage presented a cheque to the group, Dóchas Offaly Cancer Support expressed “heartfelt thanks” to Carthage for organising “such an incredible and memorable fundraiser” in loving memory of his son.
“Cartage generously auctioned off an amazing collection of sports memorabilia that he had spent over 68 years collecting, turning a lifetime of passion and treasured memories into something truly special.
Thanks to his incredible generosity and the support of everyone who contributed, an outstanding €16,962 was raised. What a wonderful tribute to John and a beautiful way to honour his memory. The time, effort and generosity that went into making the fundraiser such a success is truly appreciated. A massive thank you to Carthage and the Buckley family and to everyone who donated, bid, attended and supported the event,” said Dóchas Offaly.
