CCPC warning of Dublin Zoo scams

Ireland’s Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) is warning against online scams impersonating Dublin Zoo.

The scams have been reported to appear through social media posts or fraudulent website links, with images or videos featuring fake zoo-branded content. The CCPC say that some of the posts may offer gifts or free back-to-school packs, asking people to pay €2-€3 postage.

The CCPC says that if you think you have been scammed, you should contact your bank, as you may need to freeze your card to prevent further money from being taken. You should also contact An Garda Síochána as they are responsible for pursuing scam operators.

Aoibhín de Búrca, Director of Communications for the CCPC, said:

“Scammers are getting smarter every day. They are taking advantage of busy consumers and using established businesses with recognisable branding to create fake social media ads and clone websites.

“We know it is getting harder to spot scams online, which is why pausing before you hit pay is more important than ever. Do not click on social media ads directly or enter payment details without doing a thorough search to make sure you’re on an authentic website. Remember, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.”
