Midlands disability sports club seeks new members
Midlands based wheelchair basketball club, Shannonside Stealers, has launched a recruitment campaign for new members.
The club is calling on parents of young people with physical disabilities aged five and over to embrace wheelchair and para-sports this winter.
The team trains every Tuesday from 6.15pm to 7.45pm in Moate Sports and Recreational Centre.
Sophie Greham (11), said playing with the Shannonside Stealers wheelchair basketball team challenges her to get better.
“Shannonside Stealers is an amazing club, because everyone is really nice and support each other. It always feels like one big family where we can be ourselves and play hard," Sophie said.
Sophie's father, David, said the health and social benefits of his daughter's participation in sport are "undeniable".
While weekly sports is a commitment and the driving can be demanding, Sophie is really looking forward to a new season back with her friends.
“Accessible sports are vital because they level the playing field and give children a space where they truly belong.
"Being active and involved in sport has given Sophie strength and determination. Without sport, she may not have developed that strength, independence or determination," David said.
Sophie's father said accessible and para-sport have made a "massive, positive difference for our entire family".
“It hasn't just given Sophie an outlet to stay active and have fun, it has given us an amazing community where us as parents can connect with others who truly understand our journey," David added.
Shannonside Stealers is one of 19 clubs for people with physical disabilities across Ireland, who are affiliated with IWA-Sport.
