Curtain goes up tonight on Edenderry group's comedy play

The Absent Minded Bridegroom, a new comedy production by Edenderry drama group Gemini Players, will begin its three-night run in St Patrick’s National School this evening (Friday, October 30) at 8pm.

Ahead of opening night, the group said there had been "months of rehearsals, learning lines, making memories, building friendships and sharing plenty of laughs along the way" in order to get to this point.

"The excitement is building, the nerves are kicking in, and we can’t wait to bring The Absent Minded Bridegroom to the stage," said Gemini Players.

"Gather your family, round up your friends and come along to support us. We promise you a brilliant night of entertainment with plenty of laughs."

The fast-paced, light-hearted play is directed by John Maguire and is being staged on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 8pm each night.

Adapted from Larry E Johnson's The Absent Minded Bridegroom, the play is a period comedy, with the story set in the 1920s within a Boston Irish family.

The story begins on the eve of a wedding and showcases a chaotic chain of events thanks to the main protagonist's persona and his marriage jitters.

“It's essentially a light, old-fashioned comedy/farce built around mistaken identities, forgetfulness, romance, and escalating complications. It features both experienced and new cast members from Edenderry and surrounding areas,” shared Gemini Players Edenderry.

Formed in 2018, following a spectacular reenactment of the 1798 trial and execution of Fr Mogue Kearns and Col Perry in Edenderry Square, Gemini Players is an amateur threatre group which continues the town's proud tradition of music and amateur drama, following in the footsteps of the Boyne Players, Edenderry Musical Society and Eden Drama.

* The Absent Minded Bridegroom will be performed in St Patrick’s NS, Edenderry on October 30, 31, and November 1, at 8pm. Doors will open at 7.30pm and admission is €12, payable at the door.
