Five years since last bus shelter was installed in Offaly

It's now five years since there's been a bus shelter installed in Offaly by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), according to figures it released in response to a parliamentary question.

The figures also indicate that, despite the increased emphasis nationally on using public transport, TII added just two bus shelters in the Faithful County between 2018 and this year.

One of these shelters was added in Offaly in 2020, and the other in 2021.

The details were included in a response to a question from Green Party TD, and party leader, Roderic O'Gorman.

Deputy O'Gorman said Offaly was one of fourteen counties nationally where no bus shelters had been built last year.

"There has been a complete collapse in the number of bus shelters built nationwide between 2024 and 2025," he said.

"It's like the Government has forgotten that, with our weather, people who use the bus need to be protected from the elements.

"After the rain we experienced across the country in the last two months, the Minister for Transport needs to intervene and ensure that county councils and the National Transport Authority are putting in bus shelters so people can wait for their bus in a bit of comfort," Deputy O'Gorman added.

Offaly's neighbouring counties saw more activity when it came installing bus shelters between 2018 and this year, with 19 shelters installed in Westmeath during that time, as well as 15 in Tipperary and six in Laois.
