Man due in court in Tullamore charged with daytime aggravated burglary
A man in his mid-20s is due in court in Tullamore today after being charged with aggravated burglary at a house in Westmeath earlier this week.
The incident happened in Spittalstown, Streamstown, on Monday. A farmer is understood to have returned to his home at approximately 12.20pm to find a burglary in progress.
A local Garda spokesperson said that, with the assistance of neighbours, the homeowner managed to detain one of the alleged burglars until the Gardai arrived to arrest him.
A second alleged burglar is believed to have made his getaway from the scene by foot, while a vehicle that was left behind at the scene has been seized by Gardai.
The man who was arrested at the scene has been charged with aggravated burglary, assault causing harm, and possession of an offensive weapon.
He is due to appear before Tullamore District Court today (Wednesday).
