Big screen glitz and glamour comes to Kildare/Offaly border town

A glamorous film production is coming to the local region in the coming days as filming for a new Netflix drama takes place.

The filming started earlier today (Wednesday, March 19) and is due to run until Friday, March 20 in the Kildare/Offaly border town Rathangan, on the Main Street, and could impact on traffic flow in the region over the next few days.

The movie is called Walk the Blue Fields and will star Andrew Scott, who was most recently seen in Blue Moon and Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, alongside Emily Blunt in an adaptation of the Claire Keegan short story of the same name, with John Crowley directing.

US entertainment trade publication Deadline say that the film's cast also includes Ciarán Hinds and Tom Cullen, while the screenplay is by playwright and director Conor McPherson. The drama follows the fortunes of a woman on her wedding day as she is confronted with a massive decision, as a love triangle from her part threatens to be revealed. The Dublin-based Element Pictures and Blunt's company Ledbury Productions are among the producers of the film, with Netflix also on board.

When speaking about the project earlier this year, Emily Blunt said: “I'm so deeply excited to embark on bringing Claire Keegan's aching and electric short story to life as a movie.”

The British actress has been the recipient of several high-profile accolades including a Golden Globe Award, and has starred in blockbuster movies such as The Devil Wears Prada and Oppenheimer. Originally from Dublin, Andrew Scott is well-known for his roles on stage and screen having picked up two Laurence Olivier Awards, a BAFTA TV award and a Silver Bear Award, as well as been nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards and three Golden Globe Awards.

In a post shared on its social media platforms, Clonbollogue Community Alert said there will be three days of filming taking place in Rathangan Main Street as part of an upcoming Netflix production. The post said that filming is set to occur between March 18 and March 20 between the hours of 1pm and 11.30pm, and that during this period there may be temporary changes to parking, traffic flow and pedestrian access in nearby areas. It added that 'every effort will be made to minimize disruption and that access to homes and businesses in the area will be maintained at all times.

“You may notice production vehicles, crew members, lighting, and filming equipment in the area.. If you require specific access arrangements, have deliveries scheduled, or have any concerns, please contact Rathangan Past & Present group on Facebook and we will be happy to assist,” the post read, adding that more detailed information on changes to local parking will appear online as soon as possible.
