Risk of thundery downpour and flooding today ahead of weekend sunshine

There is a risk of thundery downpour and localised flooding today (Friday) ahead of a weekend sunshine, with temperatures expected to reach the 20s.

Midlands weather forecaster Cathal Nolan, of Ireland's Weather Channel, said Leinster and Ulster are at risk of flooding and 'a couple' of heavy showers today due to "an area of low pressure to the North West of Scotland".

However, much of this whether will clear between now and tomorrow morning (Saturday), with forecasters predicting a warm and sunny weekend.

"High pressure is developing mostly dry, bright conditions, with sunshine and temperatures reaching 20 degrees Celsius, and even 2 to 3 degrees hotter in some areas," Cathal said.

He noted next week will also tap into hot air which is currently existing over Spain and France. This is expected to impact Ireland by Wednesday and Thursday of next week.
