Part of M6 motorway closed in Westmeath due to outbreak of bog fire

A fire at Dumman bog in Milltownpass has resulted in the closure of the M6 motorway in both directions between Junction 2 (Kinnegad) and Junction 3 (Rochfortbridge) from 3pm today.

In a social media post, Westmeath County Council said the motorway closure came into effect at 3pm today (Monday) with all traffic being diverted via the R446.

The local authority confirmed that emergency services have been at the scene of a bog fire in Westmeath after a blaze broke out just after 10am.

"Visibility is very poor due to the smoke and motorists are advised to allow extra travel time, drive with caution, and follow all diversion signage in place," Westmeath County Council has stated.
