Tullamore volunteer groups join up to tackle litter 'blackspot'

Several local organisations came together last Sunday for a huge clean-up of a blackspot at The Bridge House/Bridge Street on the Tullamore river.

Members of Tullamore Tidy Towns and Junior Tidy Towns, the local angling community, Offaly Climate & Biodiversity Action Group, and The Grand Canal Way parkrun, all joined volunteers from Clean Coasts, which engages in the protection of Ireland's beaches, seas and marine life, for a clean-up that the Tidy Towns committee described on social media as 'long overdue'.

Over 15 bags of glass, pint glasses, plastic glasses, bottles, discarded litter, and cigarettes were retrieved from a small area at the bridge in the Town Centre.

The work represented the beginning of an ongoing Tullamore River awareness and clean-up project by Tidy Towns, collaborating with local community groups, schools and businesses.

A crew also focussed on the Bury Quay area of the Grand Canal with long pickers to clean-up discarded bottles, cans and litter from Kilbeggan Bridge to Cox's Bridge.

Meanwhile, the Tullamore Tidy Towns AGM will take place on Wednesday, October 7 at 7pm in the Tullamore Court Hotel.
