Seamus is Volunteer of the Month!

Seamus Corcoran, from Ballycumber, was recently announced as Offaly County Council’s Community & Culture Volunteer of the Month.

Chairperson of the Lemanaghan Bog Heritage and Conservation Group. Seamus is a founding member of this group which has gone from strength to strength over the years.

This group is focussed on preserving the rich heritage of St. Manchan’s Church, Burial Grounds, St Mella’s Cell and other aspects of this internationally recognised heritage site in Lemanaghan. St. Mella’s Cell was damaged during Storm Eowyn in 2025 and falling trees revealed a burial site. This group sought assistance from the Heritage Council’s Ceangal fund to create a film of the event and this film featured during the recent Heritage Week with groups visiting Boher Church to view it.

This group also focuses on Lemanaghan Bog and the preservation of the Toghers and the bog itself which has yielded valuable artefacts over the years. It has gained ownership of the old school in Lemanaghan where it has meetings, hosts events and stores artefacts. Seamus is a very enthusiastic Chairperson and driver of this group over many years and this work ensures that the heritage of this area will be preserved for generations to come.

Seamus was chosen as Volunteer of the Month for August.

This year is International Volunteer Year 2026, as declared by the UN. Each month in 2026, Offaly County Council’s Community & Culture section is shining a spotlight on a member of the community who volunteers their time to make a difference in their community.
