Pioneering language project seeks volunteers in Tullamore

A pioneering language project where people volunteer to teach conversational English to new migrants is being started up in Tullamore. The group behind the initiative, which began in Meath, is now establishing a centre in Tullamore, and is appealing for local volunteers to tutor on the programme. "Fáilte Isteach" was developed by Mary Nally, chairperson of the voluntary organisation Third Age Foundation, after she identified a need for accessible English classes for the new members of the community in county Meath. The first classes ran two years ago and since its inception it has provided basic language support to over 200 people from 23 different countries. The programme is student-centred and delivered in a way that is welcoming, inclusive and practical in nature. Each week a topic is chosen for discussion, from everyday situations such as 'visiting the doctor' or 'shopping' to more complex, practical lessons on 'form filling', or debating topical issues. Local employers also recognise the value of what the volunteers are doing and have sent some of their staff along to improve their language skills. Since January of this year, Fáilte Isteach centres have been established in ten different locations throughout the country and Tullamore is next on the list. 'The Fáilte Isteach programme has had an enormous positive impact on volunteers, migrants and the wider community. Not only have migrants improved their conversational English but our volunteers have made many new friends and shared so much about our culture while learning about the cultures of migrants,' said Mary Nally. The group said that a volunteer"s personal qualities are much more important than any professional experience or qualifications. 'We"re looking for volunteers who are kind, generous with their time, open to meeting new people and have a curiosity of the world around them. Patience, perseverance, reliability, commitment and the ability to guide and encourage are important in this context,' said Liam Carey, National Development Officer with Fáilte Isteach.
