Tullamore Golf Club

The singles stableford competition last weekend was sponsored by Phil O"Reilly and there was a big difference in the weather between Saturday and Sunday with pleasant sunshine on Sunday. A junior member was once again the winner with Paul Daly (9) returning 40 pts and he just edged out PJ Deering (10) on the count back. In third place was Darragh O"Toole (9) with 39 pts and the gross went to Martin Darcy (3) with 33 gross pts. The par threes must have been playing easy as there were fourteen in all. The S N Mahon prize sponsored by Hoey & Denning takes place this weekend and the PGA tankard will also go to the winner with a trip away with club PGA Professional, Donagh McArdle, later in the year also on offer. On the following weekend, the singles competition is sponsored by Tullamore Nissan. Inter Club Competitions There was further disappointment last weekend when Tullamore failed to even make the match play stages of the Jimmy Bruen in Moate when they finished 24 shots behind the leading qualifiers Moate (333 for 4 cards) and 17 behind second placed Portarlington (340). The other qualifiers were New Forest (354) and Castle Barna (356). John O"Shea & Kevin McEntee had 89; Conor Daly, drafted in at a late stage for Pat Corcoran, & Darragh O"Toole had 90; David Flanagan & Larry Lynam had 90; PJ McIntyre and Denis Guinan had 88 and JJ Flanagan & Seamus Murray finished with a 90 also. Two shots better overall would have seen them into the match-play but it was not to be. Moate defeated New Forest in the regional match play final on Sunday. There was further bad news on Sunday when the Michael Moore team suffered defeat at the hands of Athenry for the second year in a row. Tim Guiney was the only winner at home with Tom Feery losing out on the 17th and Ger Flanagan losing on the 18th. Noel Lonergan and Louis Byrne won away with Michael Kearns and John Dunne Snr losing. This Saturday the South Leinster team meets Clane with Pat Corcoran, Catch Larkin and Noel Daly at home and Gerry McCarthy, Colm Burke, Damien Beatty and Joe Cuskelly playing away. On Sunday the Barton Shield team play in Glasson. The format this year is changed with a stroke qualifier of two pairings playing foursomes on the first day with four teams to qualify for match-play on the following Sunday. The team will be selected from Ronan Coleman, Martin Darcy, Sean Flanagan, Niall Flanagan, Stuart Grehan, Eoin Marsden and Conor Ruane. Match-play The Bank of Ireland matches in the 1st round must be completed by now. In the Byrne Casey & Associates foursomes Declan Fogarty & Ronan Colman defeated Dave & Gary Hughes; Colm Cassidy & Joe Morris beat Dom Daly and Colm Burke; Aidan & Eoin Marsden won against Larry Lynam & Tony Flanagan and Tom Heery and Pascal Dunne got a walk-over. The surprise so far in this round is the defeat of Liam Keegan & Vinny O"Farrell by Kevin & Dermot Doheny. Mick Caffrey and Catch Flanagan were delighted with their success over the well handicapped Willy Egan & Ollie Hughes. Joe Healion & Michael Brennan beat Michael Kearns & Christy Gorman; Ray O"Hagan & Sean Spollen beat Michael Bryant & Oliver Conlon. The remainder of the matches have to be completed by the 10th. The Scratch Match play must be completed by 22 June. Open Day Every Monday The Open Day each Monday is now in full swing and there is a timesheet in operation so just ring 057 9321439 to book a place.
