Wins for Offaly Rowing Club at Athlone and Cork regattas

In preparation for the National Rowing Championships 2009 Offaly Rowers have competed in both the Athlone Regatta held at Coosan Point and the Monkstown Cork Harbour Regatta at Inniscarra, Co. Cork, last weekend. There was a win for Offaly Rowing Club in the men"s junior 14 double in Athlone Regatta and two wins for Offaly Rowing Club at Monkstown Cork Harbour Regatta in the junior 14 and junior 15 single sculls. Athlone Regatta saw Offaly Rowing Club and Carlow Rowing Club compete in the men"s junior 14 double scull for the fourth time this season. With two wins to their credit the Offaly double scull of Cathal Phelan and Patrick Grogan had a convincing win over the Carlow double scull, making it their third successive win. Three men"s crews competed in the junior 15 double sculls category, namely John Neale and Jarlath Glynn, Eric Conway and James Peters, Cathal Phelan and Patrick Grogan. Maurice Harnett and John Neale teamed up to represent Offaly Rowing Club in the mens junior 16 double sculls. In the mens single sculls Maurice Harnett and Eoin Mangan represented the club in the junior 16 category along with David McCabe at Intermediate level. Offaly Rowing Club women were represented at junior 14 and junior 15 in the quadruple scull. The women"s junior 14 crew of Nicole Finlay, Aoife Hehir, Leah Moran, Claire Mangan and cox Rachel Byrne came third in their finals. The women"s junior 15 quad of Emily Hehir, Rachel Byrne, Claire Mangan, Kaylin Moran with cox Leah Moran finished fourth. This weekend at Monkstown Cork Harbour Regatta, Offaly Rowing Club was represented in the men"s junior 14 single sculls by Patrick Grogan and Cathal Phelan, John Neale in the mens junior 15 single scull and Maurice Harnett in the men"s junior 18 single sculls. There was a win for Cathal Phelan at junior 14 with Patrick Grogan finishing second and a win for John Neale in the men"s junior 15 category. Maurice Harnett competing at junior 18 had a great race and qualified for the semi-finals. At Masters level both Vincent Hussey and Frank Durkin represented Offaly Rowing Club in the single sculls taking third and fourth place in the finals. In the crew boats Jarlath Glynn and Eoin Mangan rowed the men"s junior 16 double scull and the crew of John Neale, Eric Conway, Jarlath Glynn, Aaron O"Neill and cox Kaylin Moran represented Offaly Rowing Club in the junior 15 quadruple scull, both crew boats finished third in the finals. The Offaly Rowing Club women competed in the junior 14 and junior 15 quadruple sculls. The women"s junior 14 crew of Nicole Finlay, Claire Mangan, Emily Hehir, Leah Moran and cox Kaylin Moran finished third in the finals finishing behind Muckross and Killorglin Rowing Club. In the junior 15 quadruple scull, the crew of Nicole Finlay, Claire Mangan, Emily Hehir, Kaylin Moran and cox Leah Moran were placed sixth in the finals. Competing for the first time in single sculls were Nicole Finlay and Claire Mangan who were placed third and sixth respectively.
