Offaly TD addresses 'misinformation' over new asylum rules

Offaly TD Tony McCormack has addressed what he describes as misinformation surrounding the introduction of the International Protection Act, which came into effect on Friday, June 12.

Deputy McCormack said the legislation represents "the most significant reform of Ireland’s asylum system in the history of the State", introducing mandatory screening and biometric identification for applicants, while significantly speeding up the processing of asylum applications and appeals.

According to the TD, the reforms are intended to ensure that genuine applicants receive decisions more quickly.

"[It] means genuine applicants should receive decisions sooner, allowing them to begin building their lives and contributing to their communities," he said.

"It also means significant savings for taxpayers by reducing the years of accommodation, administration and legal costs associated with lengthy delays."

Deputy McCormack said the new framework is designed to make Ireland less attractive to individuals without a valid claim for international protection by ensuring that applicants cannot remain in the system for years awaiting a final decision.

Addressing wider public concerns about migration, McCormack said he does not support racism, discrimination or hatred "in any form".

"We can support strong borders, a fair asylum system and the rule of law while also treating people with dignity and respect."
