Asthma Society urging people to look out for their vulnerable family members this summer

As the warm weather continues, the Asthma Society of Ireland is urging people with asthma or other lung conditions to be careful over the coming days, especially children and young people.

The Asthma Society of Ireland is asking all sports coaches, parents and camp leaders to take extra precautions when children are active or spending longer periods outdoors.

A particular emphasis is being put on older people with asthma or any other lung conditions, as the hot and humid weather can put them at a much greater risk. The society is urging people to check on their friends and family during this period.

The Asthma Society said: “There are ways to stay well during hot weather, and these include: reducing strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day. Keeping indoor spaces as cool as possible. Checking the daily pollen and air quality forecasts, and following your Asthma Action plan.

“If anyone is experiencing worsening asthma symptoms to seek medical advice. Anyone experiencing severe breathing difficulties or symptoms that do not improve after using their reliever inhaler should seek emergency medical attention immediately.”

There are free nurse-led support services available from the Asthma Society. You can speak directly to a specialist asthma nurse or physiotherapist by calling the adviceland on 1800445464, or through their WhatsApp messaging services on 0860590132.
