Edenderry tidy towns slam 'unacceptable' dumping at Blundell Castle

Unacceptable dumping of litter and the lighting of fires has been taking place at Edenderry's Blundell Castle, according to the local tidy town's committee.

The committee took to social media to condemn the littering, which they said 'shows an unfortunate side of our town that we really need to address'. It said that during a regular clean-up around the Castle, it discovered large amounts of litter – along with shopping trolleys and other debris - and evidence of fires been lit there.

'We collected a good amount of rubbish from the area. Unfortunately, we also came across the remains of another fire inside the castle ruins, along with shopping trolleys and other debris. It’s really disappointing to see this happening in such an important part of Edenderry’s history', the committee said.

'We’re happy to do our bit to keep the area clean, but lighting fires inside the ruins is dangerous and completely unacceptable. Apart from the risk to people and the surrounding area, these are historic ruins that deserve to be respected and protected. We ask everyone to please look after Blundell Castle and, if you see anyone causing damage or lighting fires there, report it rather than turning a blind eye', the committee added.
