Next phase of Offaly's R400 Peat Pilot Scheme to begin next week

The next phase of the R400 Peat Pilot Scheme isset to commence next Monday.

The works at Derryiron and Coolcor will take place from Monday, September 28 until Friday, November 27.

The €1.2 million project will reconstruct approximately 19 km of pavement and trial improved methods for maintaining roads on peat, to enhance road safety and long-term network performance.

The first phase of the project involved innovative engineering solutions to tackle the unique challenges of constructing on peat sub-layers.

More than 8,500 cubic metres of material was excavated to depths of over one metre along a one-kilometre stretch of road.

To provide a stable, long-lasting foundation, specialist reinforcement materials were installed, including more than 15,000 square metres of geogrid across two layers. Around 13,000 tonnes of foundation material and a further 3,000 tonnes of sub-base were then laid and compacted.

The project also involved laying 6,500 square metres of new road surface, followed by the installation of drainage, road markings and signage.
