Two Offaly groups make excursion to Leinster House

Two local groups had the opportunity to witness Ireland's national parliament in action with visits to Leinster House in Dublin.

The groups – the Student Council from Tullamore Educate Together and the Killeigh Visual Arts Group – was welcomed into Leinster House by Offaly TD, Deputy John Clendennen.

The group from Tullamore Educate Together was accompanied principal Ultan Casey and teacher Sarah Cleary, and the Killeigh Visual Arts Group was led by Martina Gorman.

The Tullamore Educate Together Student Council was led by its Cathaoirleach, Lucy McCann-Conway.

The Killeigh Visual Arts Group also visited the National Museum of Ireland to view the historic Killeigh Brooch, discovered near Gurteen Bridge in Killeigh.

The brooch has a fascinating connection to the area’s heritage, with references to its discovery and early history appearing in 19th-century literature.

Speaking following the visits, Deputy Clendennen said:

“It was a real pleasure to welcome both groups to Leinster House. With plenty happening throughout the day, it was a great opportunity for our visitors to get a glimpse of political life and see our national parliament at work.

“It was particularly encouraging to meet the young student councillors and hear about their interests, while also welcoming the Killeigh Visual Arts Group, whose visit to the National Museum highlighted the rich history and heritage of their local community.

“There is always plenty on the schedule in Leinster House, but I always enjoy catching up with groups that make the trip. It is always a privilege to welcome visitors from Offaly, and I want to thank everyone who made the journey to Dublin.”
