'End of an era' as Kinnitty shop closes its doors
The Kinnitty community said goodbye to a cherished institution as De Cleir’s shop closed its doors for the last time on New Year's Eve.
After nearly 200 years of service, the beloved family-run business came to an end, marking the close of a significant chapter in the village’s history.
De Cleir’s was more than just a shop it was a central hub for locals, a place where generations gathered for their daily essentials, a friendly chat, and the latest news.
Over the years, it has been a reliable spot for everything from bags of sweets and newspapers to DVDs and even a pool room at one point.
The shop’s owner, Mick, was known for his dedication to the community and his sharp wit. His service and commitment to the people of Kinnitty will not be forgotten.
As he enters retirement, the community expressed its heartfelt thanks for his years of hard work and his integral role in village life.
TD for Offaly Carol Nolan said: "Wishing Mick all the best, your dedication, service and quick wit will be remembered!"
