Offaly councillor among more than 70 female councillors targeted by harassment

An Offaly councillor has revealed she was among more than 70 female councillors across the country who were targeted in a disturbing campaign of harassment that is now under investigation by An Garda Síochána.

Fianna Fáil councillor Claire Murray spoke publicly about her experience after the issue emerged nationally, saying she was relieved to learn she was not alone, despite wishing that no one else had been subjected to the ordeal.

In a social media post, Cllr Murray said: "Just a quick one, as I almost don't like giving this sick individual airtime but it is on the national platforms now and I was glad to know I wasn't on my own in this. (As much as I wouldn't wish it on anyone).

"I was one of, at least 70 female Councillors nationally, contacted by a male who phones continuously and if you answer, wants to talk about horrific topics concerning underage girls. He continues to call after the phonecall off a private number.

"Gardaí are working hard to trace the calls and locate this person.

"If you need me, I would urge you to make sure you don't call off a private number or leave a message."

Earlier this week, the Association of Irish Local Government (AILG) came out in support of these female councillors, condemning the "deeply concerning" reports of harassment.

AILG President Aengus O'Rourke said no elected representative should have to endure harassment simply for serving their community.

"No female elected representative should be subjected to harassment, intimidation or abusive behaviour simply because she has chosen to serve her community," he said.

He said the pattern of reports suggested a coordinated effort to target women in public office.

"Women in local government should never have to accept harassment as part of their role. AILG stands firmly with every councillor who has been affected."

O'Rourke said the Association was working closely with An Garda Síochána and urged anyone affected to report every incident.

"We will continue to support our female members while encouraging anyone affected to report every incident."
