Good result for Birr Vintage Festival emergency meeting

There was a "very positive" turnout at last Friday's EGM of Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival which was held to discuss whether enough interest existed for this year's celebrations to proceed.

A large crowd attended and in particular, the number of younger people was noticed and considered a good sign by the committee members.

Emma Nee Haslam addressed the crowd on the night and explained that while there was a certain number of committee members already dedicated to working towards this year's festival, manpower was a huge issue and that it was hoped that this meeting would see more people volunteer and get involved in bringing new input to the festival plans, which would ensure its continued vibrancy.

She also raised the fact that the committee does not have a Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson at present and the importance of filling these roles as quickly as possible as time is of the essence.

In response to a query on spending, Emma said that in the region of €90,000 was spent for the 40th festival celebrations and that in 2009 between €50,000 and €60,000 was spent. Given the economic times that are currently being experienced, €45,000 is the projected figure for the forthcoming festival but that it is completely dependent on the amount of funding and sponsorship received. The role of local media in highlighting these challenges was acknowledged and special thanks was expressed to the Offaly Independent, the Midland Tribune, the Offaly Express, The Marketplace, Birr and Midlands Radio 3 for all their assistance.

A large section of the audience signalled that they would like to volunteer which was hugely encouraging for the committee and the next meeting will be held on Friday March 26.

The meeting concluded with Emma Nee Haslam thanking all those who had come along to express their support for the festival.
