Clara to showcase industrial heritage during National Heritage Week

Visitors are being invited to discover Clara's rich industrial past as part of National Heritage Week with a special self-guided exploration of the town's historic landmarks on Saturday, August 15.

The Explore Clara's Industrial Heritage Route event will run from 9.45am to 5pm, with the Old Bank building on Main Street serving as the starting point.

Organised by the Offaly Industrial Heritage Conservation Network in partnership with Clara Heritage Society, the initiative will highlight the town's unique industrial and cultural heritage.

Clara has a long and significant industrial history, particularly through its connections with the textile industry and the expansion of the Quaker community during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The town's development was also shaped by its strategic location on the historic Esker Riada route and the banks of the River Brosna.

Throughout the day, participants will have the opportunity to explore Clara's historic buildings, streetscapes and heritage sites, gaining an insight into the people, industries and events that helped shape one of Offaly's most distinctive towns.

The event forms part of the nationwide National Heritage Week programme, which showcases Ireland's natural, built and cultural heritage through hundreds of community-led events.
