Unions planning another public sector strike next week
The Irish Congress of Trade Unions said preparations are underway for another 24-hour public sector workers' strike on Thursday of next week, November 12.
In a statement this afternoon (Monday), the congress's public services committee said the industrial action was looming because the Government was "yet to make a credible offer to resolve the current dispute" over pay.
It follows on from last month's one-day strike, on October 12, involving union members working in hospitals, schools, fire services, county councils and other State agencies. The industrial action was taken as part of efforts to secure a new pay deal to tackle inflation and the rising cost of living.
In its statement today, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) said public service unions were available for discussions and would meet with the Government Appointed Group tomorrow (Tuesday).
"Preparations are now underway for a 24-hour work stoppage on Thursday, November 12," said the ICTU. "A rally in Dublin, alongside regional rallies, will mark the strike action and bring members together in support of a resolution.
"Unions will also discuss intensifying the current work-to-rule action and further industrial action beyond November 12, as arrangements for the rallies continue," it added.
"The committee's focus remains on securing a credible offer through discussions. In the meantime, preparations for the stoppage and rallies will proceed, alongside consideration of the next steps in the industrial campaign."
